I cannot believe how big Bryan is getting. When I look at some of the children in our church, I just cannot believe how quickly they are growing up. Change is inevitable. Some of you have already witnessed moments when Bryan’s agenda and my agenda have not been one and the same. He is not shy about indicating his desire or lack thereof. I have also watched some of our children interact with their parents when they are tired or hungry. In moments such as these, there is a difference of opinion about what is the right thing to do. Conflict is inevitable. Change and conflict have been two constant companions of humanity from almost the beginning. Without change, life would cease to exist. Without conflict there would never be any growth. Change and conflict are not necessarily bad. It is our response to them that determines whether or not the results will be harmful to us and others or helpful for us and others. I am certain that change and conflict will continue to be a part of the life of Chapel Hill. No two people see things exactly the same way or solve problems with exactly the same solutions. It is important that, when we find ourselves struggling with something that has changed or find ourselves in a stressful situation of conflict, we express those feelings. Not in a manner that condemns but in a manner that reaches out. When we as a church make decisions that have winners and losers, we have chosen to take the easy and quick way out. We also have settled for much less than what God wants us to have. I hope that we will continue to stay in dialogue with one another throughout our church. When change and conflict arise, let it be an opportunity to experience something even better than we have before. Some of my best conversations with Bryan have come after such periods of change and conflict. The best is yet to be! Robert Rose |
