Our Mission is to connect each Person to God, our Community, and the World. For over 46 years, the people of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church have been serving God throughout our community and the world. Over the past 46 years, we have grown. Yet the warmth and friendliness that defined us at our beginning can still be felt today. Our commitment to missions and service continues to grow.
Our Beginnings Ground was broken for Chapel Hill's first building in October, 1962. By September, 1965, at the end of our founding pastor's ministry at Chapel Hill, we had received over 600 members and had completed the first of four building programs.
We have had five other senior ministers serve at Chapel Hill since our founding pastor, Rev. Ron Morris. Dr. James W. Rodgers was appointed to Chapel Hill in 1965 and served as our pastor for 23 years. From 1988 until 1990 Dr. Argus J. Hamilton served this congregation. Dr. Howard L. Plowman was our senior minister from 1990 to 1994. From 1994 until 2006 Dr. Guy C. Ames, III led Chapel Hill. Since 2006, Rev. Robert E. Rose, Jr., has provided pastoral leadership. Our youth today face many challenges. Our youth ministry is designed to help our youth and their families meet these challenges and for our youth to continue growing in their journey to become the persons they were created to become. We offer a comprehensive program of support, study and service that includes camps and retreats, Sunday school, Bible Studies, Sunday evening and weeknight activities, worship, recreational activities and special trips. Our youth are very engaged in helping others by serving on mission trips to inner cities, to places of need in our own country, to other countries and to areas of need within our own community. We have seventeen adult Sunday school classes providing Christian study that is as diverse as our body of faith. From time to time new classes are formed in response to the changing needs of our growing congregation. Sunday morning worship services allow us to join together to celebrate our faith and to worship God. Our music ministry gives expression to that spirit of worship through the adult choirs (Chancel and Revelation), through our youth choir and through our different children's choirs. Other special music that brings added beauty to our worship experience is provided by our different bell choirs, various ensembles and exceptional soloists. Chapel Hill ministers to the needs of our congregation in many ways. One of our strengths is the opportunity for growth offered through short-term and long-term Bible studies and other courses. Over the years hundreds of our members have participated in various Bible studies including Bethel, Beth Moore and Disciple. We offer several different opportunities for discipleship growth throughout the year. Our Care Ministry supports our homebound and those persons recovering from illness or surgery. We provide grief support and offer many different avenues for support through our prayer ministries. We also have many Stephen Ministers who provide distinctively Christian one-on-one care. Members of our congregation have an opportunity for support and service through many ministries and activities. These opportunities include United Methodist Women, Women’s Ministry, Men's Ministry, Single’s Ministry, Retired Fellowship, Senior Adult groups and Boy Scouts, to name only a few. We have many people who are involved in the various expressions of the Walk to Emmaus movement. Our church reaches beyond its wall through our support of mission and service causes. The BritVil Food Pantry, Whiz Kids, Project Transformation, Mobile Meals, Campus Ministries and Skyline Urban Ministries benefit by the generosity of Chapel Hill members giving of their time, talents and treasures. Our church’s regular and Faith Promise giving extends our outreach to many ministries in the Metro area and throughout the world. Our United Methodist Women's support of missions is another example of the emphasis we place on meeting people’s needs in our community and throughout the world. Members of our congregation participate on several Volunteers-in-Mission teams each year. We serve in several countries as well as around Oklahoma and the United States. Our annual mission trip to Rio Bravo, Mexico, helps meet some of the medical and housing needs of residents of that border area.
The Future
Our Mission
Our Vision Our intent is to invite others to join us in connecting with God in worship, through God’s Word, and in friendship. Our hope is that we will be a community that strengthens families, encourages people, offers hope, healing and wholeness and empowers followers of Jesus Christ to connect with our city and our world. |
